This study is about the project of a gact database development being conducted by Gradute School of Public Health, Seoul National University with a fiancial and technical support from the Korea Research and Development Information Center (KORDIC). We developed the Korean Public Health Database (KPHDB), a fact database, with national public health data in 1995 and expanded its scope by incorporating biomedical mesurement data in 1996. From 1997, we have developed and been maintaining a web-based fact database system by accomplishing a programming project for database management operation. Its purpose is to expand a scope of user for those who want to stilize various health data more easily and more efficiently.
In this fact database system, we have two broad categorise : public health statistics database and biomedical measurement database. These database might primarily can draw attention from those not database.
This study was conducted 1) to collect and classify systematically, 2) to develop a fact database, and 3) to computerize for internet for easy access from general users as well as professionals with data developed through various data reporting system, national and local surveys, and other public health researches. We expect its use will provide basis for scientific researches and health policies development.
The name of the web-server system developed through our research is ´Korean Public Health Database (KPHDB)´ and its URL is ´http://kphdb.snu.ac.kr/ (//147.46.171.72/)´ and is in operation since November, 1997 with Windows-NT 4.0 (Korean)
Basic stategy in operating the system is to provide for user with 1) addition of new data into the database system, 2) various dynamic modes of data presentation for utilization, 3) development of appropriate fact database and technical methods for operation of the web-based DB, and 4) development of a query system for questions from users based on summarized and various information provision.
An emphasis was given to building a DBMS by resing textfile-like database and developing technical way to provide data information on the web-system. Under a princple of securing importance and efficiency for users as a public data utilization source for health data, we have been through adding new data sets, and enhancing its quality by managing and providing the information by checking for any inappropriateness.
